Government

The Frame of Government

The colony of Pennsylvania was ruled according to the number of laws made by William Penn called " The Frame of Government. " In these laws, were things like a man accused of a crime had to have a trial with 12 jurors.
Also things like, all men who owned land could vote. Every child had to be properly taught to read and write. Anyone was free to pray to who they wanted or what they wanted. For anyone who believed in the Christian God was free to worship in his own way.
William Penn wanted the laws to be more fair than the laws they had in England and in other colonies that didn't let you have as many rights.
There was also the way that Penn wanted the indians to be treated. He wanted peace between the colonists and the Native Americans that already owned the land when they came to settle. In 1682, the Native Americans from the Delaware, Susquehannock, Shawnee tribes and the colonists met. They then agrred to live together in peace and this peace lasted for over 70 years.
